Agriculture in Brazil and Argentina Developments and Prospects for Major Field Crops
Abstract:
"This report identifies key factors underlying the
agricultural productivity growth and enhanced international
competitiveness of Brazil and Argentina in the past decade.
Economic and policy reforms, infrastructure development, and
enhanced use of agricultural inputs that drove output growth
during the 1990s are discussed. This report also compares
Brazilian, Argentine, and U.S. soybean production costs and
evaluates the combined impact of production, marketing, and
transportation costs on the overall export competitiveness of each
country's soybean producers. Finally, the outlook for continued
growth in output and exports of key commodities is assessed".

Bittersweet Harvests for Global Supermarkets
Challenges
in Latin America's Argicultural Export Boom.
Abstract:
"Thanks to liberalized trade and development strategies with
Latin America and the Caribbean, U.S. grocery stores now offer
exotic fresh produce virtually year round. While this boom in
"non-traditional " agroexports is yielding impressive
economic returns for South American Producers, it is also exacting
a price: farm workers' failing health, social and economic
inequity, and environmental degradation. Bittersweet Harvest
is the first book to chronicle in detail both the benefits and
shortcoming of trade and structural adjustment policies promoted
throughout Latin America and the Caribbean during the 1980s.
Drawing on empirical research and face-to-face discussions with
small farmers, farmworkers, and government policymakers in Latin
America. Bittersweet Harvest includes specific recommendations for
guiding non-traditional agroexport policies onto a more
sustainable path".
